HIMALAYAN IBEX (Capra sibirica sakeen)

INFORMATION

The Himalayan Ibex is a native species that may be found in Pakistan's Himalayan and Karakoram Ranges. In and around the town of Gilgit, there are a number of community-managed areas that are suitable for recreational hunting. There are two countries that are believed to be Ibex: Skardu and Hunza. The size of a horn that is 40 inches in length is regarded to be quite typical. Not only does this hunt need a high level of physical power, but there are also creatures that may be located at lower elevations in particular regional areas during specific times of the year.

Altitude and Temperature:

In Gilgit, during the month of November, the sky is clear or sunny (or at least partly overcast) for around 56% of the day on average. In most cases, it is pleasant. The month of January is the coldest period near Gilgit. Temperatures can range from a high of 26 degrees Fahrenheit (-3 degrees Celsius) to a low of 3 degrees Fahrenheit (-16 degrees Celsius) on an average day. Midway through the month of March, temperatures may begin to climb. In spite of the fact that April is the wettest month, the weather is often considerably more pleasant than it is in the spring. Hunting grounds may be found at elevations ranging from 2800 meters to 4000 meters. But when there is a lot of snow in the latter months, it causes the ibex to fall. Sometimes it is even possible to hunt them from the side of the road or with very little climbing involved.

Hunting season:

The hunting season for Himalayan Ibex begins in September and extends through mid-April. We generally avoid commencing Himalayan Ibex hunting prior to mid-November, as the animals are usually found at higher elevations due to increased temperatures. The late November to December timeframe seems to be the most advantageous, as it aligns with the rutting season. This period presents hunters with an enhanced opportunity to focus on larger males. Prolonged winter conditions and substantial snowfall in March and April may necessitate the migration of ibex herds to lower elevations. Hunters may encounter optimal conditions for an effective and uncomplicated hunt.

Hunting method and number of days required:

A 10-day itinerary allows ample time for a Himalayan Ibex hunt, although it is common for hunters to finish their pursuits a few days earlier than planned. A standard hunting day typically begins at dawn. Depending on the circumstances, sometimes even beforehand. The main technique utilized for hunting is spot and stalk. The community is fully engaged and enthusiastic about contributing to this managed hunting initiative. As a result, they possess knowledge of the locations of key targets even before the hunter approaches the area.
